Quantity and Nature of Patient Care Experiences All students (and residents) are required to use Meditrek, a web ‐ based data system, to record all patient encounters. The entries include the diagnoses and distinguish between patient encounters experienced during vision screenings, encounters in which supervised patient care was provided by one student, encounters in which supervised patient care was shared by more than one student, and encounters in which the experience was by observation only. Reports of Student ‐ Patient Encounters (3 rd and 4 th Year) are monitored and evaluated by the 3 rd and 4 th year clinic instructors of record, director of externships and Clinical Education Council and overseen by the chair of the Department of Clinical Education to ensure each student is meeting clinical learning objectives. At the time of graduation, the average student over the last five years saw 1,659 patients (on average, 25 in the second year, 163 in third year, 225 during fourth ‐ year internal rotation and 1,184 during fourth ‐ year external rotations). Data for recent years are summarized in the chart below. First year students also see patients during observations in the clinics and while working as EHR as scribes, but these were not logged for this analysis
