MSCHE Self Study April 2021

Academic Affairs and Department chairs annually review course syllabi to ensure they address curricular learning objectives. The OD program is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE), a specialized accreditor recognized by the US Department of Education and CHEA ( ACOE Accreditation Notification Letter ; ACOE Professional Program Accreditation Manual ). The campus was most recently visited in spring, 2019 ( ACOE Self ‐ Study ), and the resultant ACOE Accreditation report included no recommendations ( ACOE Evaluation Report ). Outcome Measures Used to Assess Educational Effectiveness Overview As described in the College’s Assessment Plan , assessment of student learning at the program level occurs through multiple mechanisms, including tracking of the following key performance indicators:  Performance on national licensing examination (NBEO) o Part 1: Applied Basic Science o Part 2: Patient Assessment and Management o Part 3: Clinical Skills  Percentage of matriculating students who have passed all three parts of the NBEO licensing exam (or who are actively practicing in another country) six years after enrolling 9 Other sources of information include:  Annual exit surveys  Annual alumni surveys administered to the class that graduated about 6 years previously  Course and clinic student evaluation surveys NBEO Performance A key assessment of student learning with respect to curricular objectives is performance on the national licensing examinations administered by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO). Founded in 1951 as a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, the NBEO develops, administers, and scores examinations, and reports the results to state regulatory boards authorized to license optometrists to practice eye care. All 50 states and Puerto Rico use portions of these examinations in the licensing of optometrists. The College is provided with detailed information regarding the performance of its students and aggregate nationwide data for students at all the schools and colleges of optometry. These data allow the College to analyze performance of its students in the various subject areas and to utilize  Quantity and nature of each student’s patient ‐ care experiences  Percentage of graduates who intend to enter a residency program  Retention/attrition rates

9 This is related to a standard of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE), the specialized accrediting agency that reviews the professional program.
