Standard V: Educational Effectiveness Assessment

Linkage of Standard to Institutional Priorities The College’s Strategic Plan 2018 ‐ 23 includes the following goals, which are also strategic priorities selected in the self ‐ study design process:  Enhance the student experience through programs that promote student and alumni success  Deliver a dynamic curriculum that engages students and advances contemporary optometry Implementation of these priorities will be assessed with the processes detailed in the College’s Assessment Plan , which is updated in conjunction with the strategic planning process that occurs every five years. The most recent comprehensive review of this plan occurred in conjunction with the development of the Strategic Plan 2018 ‐ 23 . Ongoing progress in meeting these goals is discussed in this standard. Institutional Assessment Plan The College has a detailed, comprehensive Assessment Plan that addresses all its operations, including educational effectiveness assessment of the optometry, graduate and residency programs. The primary goals are to track program data longitudinally and provide measures of effectiveness in meeting program missions and goals. We use these data and analyses for program improvement, as discussed later in this standard. Extensive outcomes data are published on Factbook , a compendium of College key indicators ( Factbook Webpage ‐ PDF ). The College’s mission, goals and objectives give rise to the goals of the optometry program, which are to graduate optometrists who are (1) knowledgeable, clinically competent, professional and ethical and (2) prepared to think critically as life ‐ long learners who understand the scientific basis of the profession and apply the fundamentals of evidence ‐ based practice to patient care. The program provides opportunities to customize learning to student interests on advanced topics through elective courses, the selection of advanced clinic assignments and pursuit of micro ‐ credentials. These goals, in turn, are used to generate the Professional Program’s Learning Objectives (curricular learning objectives), which serve as the basis for curriculum development. The Dean’s Council periodically reviews these learning objectives to ensure they adequately support the independent practice of contemporary optometry. Course syllabi identify learning objectives derived from these curricular learning objectives for implementation at the course and lecture (instructional unit) level. Assessment of student knowledge and competencies with written and practical pre ‐ clinical examinations and evaluations of clinical performance by clinical instructors ( Clinic Grading Form ) supports the attainment of course and program learning objectives.
