16th Annual
OPTOMETRIC CENTER OF NEW YORK Founded in 1956, the Optometric Center of New York has a long and distinguished history of service to New York – first as a patient care and training facility, later as an endowing foundation. Today, it supports the mission of SUNY College of Optometry as the campus-affiliated foundation. The Optometric Center of New York (OCNY) stands as a shining example of what cooperation among visionary community leaders in education, business and philanthropy can accomplish. Since its inception, OCNY has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the New York community and to the community-at-large. Whether supporting vision care for the working poor and indigent patients at the University Eye Center and the College’s affiliate sites; awarding scholarships to optometry students who are academically outstanding and financially deserving; or supporting research into the complex human visual system, the OCNY remains dedicated to the future of healthcare and to the advancement of vision science. The OCNY is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit foundation and is chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Jessica & Ella-Jane Darcy Founders, Funoogles
When Ella-Jane opened her eyes one morning, something had changed. The glasses she loved so much had grown too familiar. Why couldn’t she have something of her own creation? She wished for eyewear that would match her style and mood every single day. Ella-Jane was born with a congenital Cataract, a disease that would try to claim the vision in her right eye. At just 5 years old, she had endured a procedure to ensure that her sight wouldn’t be lost forever. Funoogles doesn’t just give children the ability to choose and interchange the color and style of their glasses. It gives them a way to express creativity, assert individuality and boost self-esteem. Just as importantly, it gives parents an affordable way to keep their kids in fashion. Our products are designed in America, but our purpose spans the globe. With a little imagination, a lot of fun, and the help of the like-hearted, our hope is to reach children across the world who lack access to proper eye care. Today, Ella-Jane lives happily in New York with her father, her older sister and brother, and her mother, Jessica Darcy, the creator and president of Funoogles.

Dr. Denise M. Whittam, ‘91 2020 Alumna of the year
Dr. Denise Whittam is a 1991 graduate of SUNY College of Optometry. Cohen’s Fashion Optical recently presented her with a recognition award for 40 years of service and they have thrice awarded her Doctor of the year. She is also a J&J Professional Affairs Consultant and Ambassador Speaker and Facilitator. In her spare time, Denise has been a tireless advocate for the profession of Optometry for almost three decades. She is the only optometrist who has served as the President of New York State Optometric Association, Optometric Society of the City of New York, the Children’s Vision Coalition and SUNY College of Optometry Alumni Association Board. Among her many honors and awards is NYSOA Optometrist of the Year, 2014. She has published numerous articles and essays in professional publications. During her 26 years as a volunteer serving SUNY College of Optometry on the Alumni Association Board she was a regular presence on campus, sharing her enthusiasm for the profession and supporting all signature student, alumni and fundraising events. She has generously donated to student scholarships, patient care and supported fundraising campaigns. Denise served as the Alumni Association Board President from 2013-2018. Under her leadership she championed the historic merger of the association into the Optometric Center of New York, resulting in unprecedented participation in the alumni community. In her own words: “To be honored and recognized by one’s own colleagues and friends is by far the highest achievement one can attain. I never realized that my experience at SUNY College of Optometry and pursuing the optometric profession would lead to meeting such incredibly bright, inspirational people, who not only became my friends, but also my family. I would be lost without their support and friendship. I am eternally grateful to the faculty of SUNY for passionately sharing their knowledge and clinical skills with me, not only during my four years at SUNY, but ongoing to this day. They have become my mentors, my confidantes, and my friends, who feel like brothers and sisters to me for the rest of my life.” -Denise Whittam

March 27, 2020
Dear Friends:
It is an honor and great pleasure to welcome you to the 17th Annual Eyes on New York Award Celebration. The Eyes on New York Award Celebration honors the great work of the Optometric Center of New York, the SUNY College of Optometry and its University Eye Center, and individual leaders in optometry. Since 1956, the Optometric Center has played an invaluable role in our community by giving all New Yorkers access to vision care. Their support for important research at the SUNY College of Optometry, along with incredible outreach efforts and extensive neighborhood programming, have made the Optometric Center the remarkable institution of community eye care and innovation that it is today. I am proud to have such an esteemed organization in my district. This year has been momentous and bittersweet as we simultaneously mourn the loss of Barbara Saltzman, the beloved President of the Board of Trustees for the Optometric Center, and celebrate the opening of the new Center for Pediatric Eye Care which bears her name. The Barbara Saltzman Center for Pediatric Eye Care will provide innovative and much-needed vision care to children and families in our community. I am honored to have been able to allocate a grant to help complete this new eye care center, and I can think of no greater way to honor Barbara’s legacy. I want to express my heartfelt congratulations to the Optometric Center for its years of service to New Yorkers in need. I also congratulate tonight’s honorees, Dr. Denise Whittam, who will be recognized as Alumna of the Year for her nearly 30 years of leadership and service to the College, and Ella-Jane and Jessica Darcy of Funoogles who will receive the Eyes on Innovation Award for their innovative eyewear company. These honorees embody the spirit of the Optometric Center, and I am proud to see them honored within my district.
Best wishes,
Brad Hoylman State Senator 27th District

New York has long demonstrated global excellence in health care, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the many institutions working to improve public health throughout the five boroughs, especially as we fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Established in 1956, the SUNY College of Optometry and its Optometric Center of New York are leaders in the field of vision care, sponsoring scholarships for optometry students, training the next generation of medical professionals, funding innovative research, and providing high-quality services to diverse New Yorkers, including people from underserved communities. As you gather virtually to advance this shared mission, I applaud everyone associated with the College and Center for their efforts to strengthen our healthcare sector and improve the wellbeing of our residents during this challenging time. Together, we are forging a brighter, healthier future for all. On behalf of all New Yorkers, congratulations to tonight’s honorees.
