Social welfare counselor: a graduate social welfare student from the Stony Brook School of Social Welfare offers personal counselling three times a week at the Student Affairs suite. The counselor: • Provides supportive counseling for students struggling academically and/or emotionally • Helps with strengthening/exploring coping skills to deal with different life and/or academic stressors • Provides different tools that can help students increase a sense of balance between academic responsibilities and family/life responsibilities • Provides psycho education about common mental health issues for students and share available resources Students can access this service by reaching out to the counselor directly (emails with contact information are sent periodically) or by contacting the Vice President for Students Affairs. SUNY Student Tele-Counseling/Psychiatry: The SUNY Student Tele-Counseling network provides free tele-counseling services for all of our students through the SUNY Upstate Medical Department of Psychiatry. This service provides students with access to high-quality mental health services that can be accessed at your convenience. The tele-counseling services include diagnostic assessment, tele-counseling and tele-psychiatry. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is also available, however, please note that we have a waitlist for this service due to its high demand. Tele-counseling services are confidential, and our mental health professionals are licensed and trained to help you with a wide range of mental health concerns. To get started with our tele-counseling services, you must be referred by the office of student affairs. You can access the service by scheduling an appointment with the Vice President for Student Affairs. Gouverneur Healthcare Services: major health insurances accepted, including Medicaid. Students without health insurance can get treatment and will be charged according to a sliding scale. Contact the Office of Student Affairs for more info. Crisis Text Line: Staffed 24/7/365 by trained volunteers skilled in active listening, Crisis Text Line helps individuals in distress move from a hot moment to a cool calm. There is a New York specific keyword for Crisis Text Line: SUNY participants can text “Got5U” to 741 -741. Headspace: Headspace is a meditation and mindfulness app that has programs for focus, sleep, and other resources to encourage mental wellness. Several external and internal studies have shown that use of Headspace can decrease stress, increase compassion, and improve mental, emotional, and social health. We are pleased to offer 100 free licenses for this app on a first come first serve basis. Interested students can contact the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.
