Great supervisor, great colleagues who also shared a great passion for the career and the desire to practice medically. Working along side MDs including glaucoma specialists and retina specialists further enhanced my clinical experience. The residency provided a lot of well-rounded valuable experience in vision therapy. We were able to get a lot of experience in head trauma, strabismus, vision and learning, and I really enjoyed having seminars from well- known vision therapy doctors. Patient care was never not enough, there was a lot of patient experience! I really enjoyed being surrounded by so many other residencies to work together with them. It was also invaluable to be able to teach a vision therapy course to third year students. Having to write a research paper and give a one-hour CE was also a very good experience. Thanks for pushing us to do that because it really makes us strong residents! Great mentorship and guidance from attendings. Lot of patient encounters has allowed me to build my clinical skills. Opportunity to precept students has allowed me to build my teaching skills, as well as expand my own knowledge basis on the subject matter. The supervisors are at the top of their field and willing to teach. The SUNY downstate ophthalmology grand rounds were a great learning and networking experience. The wide variety of the patient base means that I got exposure to all sorts of conditions and types of patients which has made me a more well-rounded clinician. All of the attendings are invested in our education and want us to learn so I feel like my knowledge base grew exponentially this year.

Type of patient population seen inner City in NYC is something that i feel would not be exposed to in other location Personally had great experiences with my residency supervisor who really helped to make sure I was getting the most out of residency and having the best learning experience. I enjoyed the Friday program because while my residency was in one specialized area, it helped me to learn about all the other areas as well and remain a well- rounded optometrist.

Less bitchyness. So many issues. I don't complain or react to that type of interaction and I think that upset them much more than had I played their game of disrespect. Hours spent preparing for major and paper took away from individual learning on other topics. Was expecting more instructional seminars. - less glaucoma clinics at SUNY. At Woodhull, there is a lot of glaucoma treatment as well. So, replacing some glaucoma clinics with specialty electives is a good idea. Perhaps some efforts can be put towards better scheduling patients. However, this becomes a office management issue that needs to be addressed rather than a residency program associated problem. Overall, great program. Communication. Oftentimes we do not hear about residency deadlines until a week before. We did not receive paper cover letter sample until after the deadline. Jackie Sanchez also gives us 1-3 day deadlines to complete things at times, although I do appreciate that she is giving us those reminders. Not all doctors are able to teach us and make time to teach us. Most are too busy to even sit for more than 5-10 minutes to explain something or try to expand our knowledge on a topic. I feel that I gained a lot of patient experience but not as much knowledge and critical thinking, such as journal clubs, discussing cases, what is the most recent research. The SUNY schedule is also extremely packed that doctors do not have time to give residents this type of knowledge. Some doctors are too hands-off with residents. Although we are doctors too, this is our residency education. Saturday doctors should only have one patient at a time so they have more time to supervise us. I think that the deadlines for the paper and major presentation should be revised to allow the residents to have more time to review clinical cases they see throughout the week, and expand on their clinical knowledge outside of their major/minor/paper topic. Perhaps transitioning between the two sites can be extended every 3 months. It will improve continuity of care for some patients. I feel like I had to spend many hours each month logging my patients for the residency which left me with less time to do academic activities like reading journals and researching interesting cases. more time to research/learn from cases as opposed to so much fast-paced direct care where there is no time to spend thinking/reasearching. The transition from being a student to resident, especially in term of teaching current students was not as smooth as I expected. Additional guidence in this area would be beneficial Better communication between office of residency education and residents; e.g. sending out reminders and announcements earlier (but not too early, like sending out the author's checklist for the paper 6 months in advance, and we have forgotten about it in May when it is due). Also, keeping track of which year things were sent out: "Didn't we tell you about ____? That must have been last year's residents." I felt that there was alot of time after hours devoted to minor /majors and that it took away from review of things one would see daily basis to solidify clinical foundation which is what I wanted most out of residency Saturday clinic has improved, but having to be present every single Saturday for an entire year is tough. It is difficult to take off or call out sick on a Saturday becuase often the schedule was not adjusted and other residents would have to pick up the "slack". Some residents took more Saturdays off than others or had an easier time getting excused leave. We all would like some Saturdays off and there should definitely be some type of limit imposed on how many you can take off during the year. Additionally speaker's workshop was tough on some people this year. Instead of being constructive, it seemed like a negative experience, even if you performed to the expectation. I think communication about what is required for speaker's workshop should be more clear next year to make sure that all the feedback is actually taken as constructive criticism. too much unprofessional favoritism and drama amongst students and attendings

More chances to teach labs/seminar. Also, there was too much speciality contact lenses in on of the SUNY rotations. It would be better to have the chance to choose another clinic is: peds instead. Also, having to work every Saturday while other residents (head trauma, CL, primary care etc) did not have too was unfair. We all should have to work on Saturdays or at least have rotating Saturdays to make it more fair Understanding or resident roles in other clinics. Supervisor? Direct care? Grand rounds? Education is very limited from many of the supervisors, so more effort should have been taken to have additional lectures to aid our learning. Many times I felt like I could have learned just as much from a great mentor in a private practice setting!! I would have enjoyed precepting more. Morning lectures when associated with specialty clinics were beneficial but otherwise didn't help as much. Exhaustive work (minor/major AND paper) on top of VA clinical duties, it was easy to burn out. VA residencies are tougher and allot for less time to complete the assignments. Too many little deadlines to meet along the way. Maybe having more regular emails about the schedule like upcoming Fri programs, or a countdown to majors/minors/paper due date and residency end date. Etc.

After doing this residency, I feel like I wasn't ready at all to be a clinician after I graduated but I am much more confident now and will be able to handle being on my own when the residency is over. Speakers Workshop was a traumatic experience (not necessarily for me, but watching others suffer was very awkward). Please tell the residents that it is serious, to dress up, to make a PowerPoint, that they will be harshly critiqued etc. These things were not told to the in-house residents and the result was difficult to watch.

Had a good experience as far as my interactions with SUNY. Not a good experience at my residency site with very poor professionalism and a toxic work environment at times. Still, fell that I have learned alot and am a better clinician than had I not done the residency. --I still cannot get over Dr. McGovern berating my colleagues in front of everyone during speakers workshop. It was unnecessary and uncalled for --Saturday clinic is tough, it really took away from having a life outside of residency which I believe is mentally healthy and much needed. Many residents did not have to work saturdays or only had to do half. I think that's something that should be considered for every resident. We work really hard, so having some Saturdays off would have been nice.
