MSCHE Self Study April 2021

this information to improve student learning at both the course and program level. Board Score Analysis reports are reviewed by the dean and discussed with department chairs as warranted. The exam is currently comprised of three components: Part I (Applied Basic Science), Part II (Patient Management and Assessment or PAM), and Part III (Clinical Skills). According to the NBEO, Part I assesses basic science knowledge necessary to perform safely and adequately as an entry ‐ level optometrist, Part II assesses cognitive ability to assimilate and synthesize basic case ‐ based clinical information using patient cases, solo items, and minicases and Part III is a patient ‐ oriented performance test. The targeted administrations of Parts I, II and III are, respectively, spring of 3 rd year, winter of 4 th year and 4 th year. The College recognizes performance on the NBEO licensing examinations as an important outcome assessment of student learning because it (1) provides a comparison with a national database, (2) allows tracking of student performance from year ‐ to ‐ year, (3) provides an objective measure of entry level competence and (4) must be passed (all three parts) for licensure in the United States. From 2012 ‐ 2020 about 96% of graduating students passed all 3 parts of the NBEO examination by the time of graduation. 10 As indicated in the following graph, the percentage of our students who have passed all three NBEO parts at graduation is consistently above national comparison values: 11
