meetings with the residency director who discusses various topical areas relating to doing a residency, presentations given as part of the professional curriculum, dissemination of various program announcements and information and interactions with residents who serve as instructors in clinical laboratories and rotations. In recent years, about 40% of graduating SUNY students indicate they plan to enter a residency program either affiliated with SUNY or another school/college of optometry. The recruitment, application, selection and appointment processes are detailed in the Manual of Procedures for Residency Programs . Optometry school grades, performance on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO), a statement of interest and performance in an interview are used to assess residency candidates. Certain programs may employ an examination as part of the interviewing process. Residency matches are conducted by the Optometry Residency Matching Service (ORMatch) for all programs except the residency in Vision Rehab/Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation at Womack Army Medical Center. Obtaining a position can be competitive. For 38 residency positions available in 2016 ‐ 17, 40 in 2017 ‐ 18 and 40 in 2018 ‐ 19, the total number of applicants were, respectively, 171, 177 and 175. For 2019 ‐ 2020 there were 41 positions and 223 applicants, while for 2020 ‐ 2021 there were 42 positions and 199 applicants. Policies and procedures related to probation, counseling, remediation, separation from program and grievances are published in the Manual of Procedures for Residency Programs (in particular, pages 29 ‐ 30). Residents employed by SUNY are classified as temporary academic employees and subject to the UUP bargaining agreement. Affiliated residents are considered employees of the individual site and subject to site ‐ specific procedures. The Office of Student Affairs is under the leadership of the vice president for student affairs (VPSA). A member of President’s Council, the VPSA oversees long ‐ range planning and all the activities and services provided by Office of Students Affairs. The mission of the Office is to provide innovative and best ‐ of ‐ industry services and programs that support students’ academic, clinical and career objectives. In addition to two full time staff assistants, the office consists of the director of admissions and marketing, director of financial aid/assistant vice president for student affairs, director of career development and minority enrichment, the registrar and an admissions assistant. A part ‐ time international program coordinator (0.2 FTE) also works in the office (Office of Student Affairs Organizational Chart and Office of Student Affairs Position Descriptions ). Financial Aid and Debt Counseling On the days that prospective students are interviewed, each applicant is provided with a Financial Aid and Housing Guide as well as the process for applying for federal financial aid.
