PART 1: Self-Assessment PROCEDURE:

Please spend 20-30 minutes reflecting on your strengths, weaknesses, and personal/ professional values by answering the following questions below. If you have difficulty with providing a response, refer to the additional self-assessment list (pp. 4 5) to identify those skills and abilities that come easy to you. In addition, you can identify any skills from the list you find challenging. Your responses to the prompts should assist in identifying core values that are personally important to you in your career development. Once you identify those values, you can begin to think about and draft your professional mission statement. Use the examples to guide your first attempt. This is just a draft; you can update your mission statement as you gain insight as to what is important to you. Regarding your mission and vision, keep in mind your career development with respect to scholarship, education/teaching, patient care, and national/international service.

I. VALUES: What is important to you? What drives and guides you? 1) What are your natural strengths?

2) What are your weaknesses?

3) Name 3 professional role models.

4) What qualities, accomplishments, or traits do you admire about them?

5) In light of your values, personal priorities, and sources of motivation, identify 2-3 core values that are significant to you (e.g., service to others, loyalty, kindness, excellence, achievement, reputation, integrity, compassion, recognition).
