PUBLIC SAFETY
I. University Police Department (UPD) The mission of the University Police Department at SUNY College of Optometry is to provide a safe working environment to the College Community that is conducive to its educational pursuits. It is the function of the University Police Department (UPD) to provide security, protect life and property, enforce applicable laws and regulations, and to ensure public safety on College premises. To accomplish this goal, policies and procedures have been developed under the aegis of the Office of Administration and Finance and in conjunction with the Offices of University Police, Student Affairs, President, Human Resources, and University Eye Center. The College’s Health, Safety, and Energy Conservation Committee routinely review these policies and procedures. Typical services provided by UPD are to: 1. respond to all incidents (criminal or non-criminal) on campus 2. respond to emergencies on campus and coordinate the response with external emergency response agencies 3. conduct crime prevention trainings and talks 4. respond to service requests; escorts, lockouts etc. 5. enforce access control procedures; ID checks, visitor pass controls, intruder deterrence etc. Building hours: The building is open for regular business Mondays through Saturdays. The building is accessible on Sundays during the hours below, albeit limited facility services. - Mondays to Fridays - building is open from 7am - 10pm
- Saturdays - building is open from 7am – 8:30pm - On Sundays, the building is open from 10am - 10pm Building is closed on all NYS sanctioned and recognized holidays
Crime Prevention & Safety Programs: University Police Department is made up of Police Officers, Communications & Security Specialists, and Security Services Assistants (SSA). University Police Officers have full law enforcement powers on campus. Police Officers have the authority to enforce all applicable laws and SUNY Regulations. Officers may arrest violators within their jurisdiction (Geographic Area of Employment). All Police Officers have completed
