Student Handbook

Health Insurance Program Options The College strives to build a vibrant community. A vibrant community is a healthy community. As such, we require every student to have health insurance coverage. Starting August 1, 2018 all new students will be required to have health insurance to enroll. • In January 2015, many new health insurance options became available through the Individual Marketplace, New York State’s insurance website (“insurance exchange”), which was designed and implemented under the Affordable Care Act. • On the Individual Marketplace website you can quickly compare health plan options and apply for assistance that could lower the cost of health coverage. The site’s address is listed below: • Students and families may also qualify and enroll in free or low-cost coverage insurance from Medicaid or Child Health Plus on this website. • It is required that domestic students be insured before the beginning of the academic year. No open enrollment period exists for the Individual Marketplace and preexisting conditions are covered by law. • You should choose a health insurance plan that is affordable but that also meets your individual needs. When choosing a plan, including Medicaid, consider: o Level of coverage you need (monthly premium, cost per visit) o Plan network (doctors, clinics and hospitals covered by the plan; staying within any given network will save you money) o Prescription drug coverage and costs (take into consideration formulary medications that you may be currently taking for preexisting conditions) o Exclusions and limitation o Out-of-state coverage (this is particularly important on your fourth year rotation if you are assigned to out-of-state rotations) International students are required to have health insurance coverage. The State University of New York has a mandatory health insurance plan for all international students (automatically charged to international students’ tuition bills by the Burs ar’s Office.) For more information, please visit the following website: https://www.uhcsr.com, or view this United Health Care Member Guide . o International students may be waived from this comprehensive plan if they provide the College with verification from their health insurance carrier detailing the coverage that they have.
