Institutional Federal Compliance Report 2021

Students who have been approved for testing accommodations must notify their professors of their needs at the beginning of each semester. It is also a good idea to remind these professors one week prior to a scheduled exam. If a student waits to notify their faculty members, last minute requests for accommodations cannot be guaranteed. Behavioral Concerns The ADA does not excuse the inappropriate behavior of students. • A student is not qualified for accommodations if he/she cannot comply with the College’s Code of Ethics or if he/she poses a serious risk of harm to others. • An institution may discipline a student with a disability for engaging in misconduct if it would impose the same discipline on a student without a disability. • Misconduct due to not taking prescribed medication does not have to be accommodated. Grievance Procedures Students have 10 business days from the date a decision is rendered by the Student Disability Liaison to appeal the decision to the SUNY College of Optometry’s director of human resources/Title IX officer. The appeal or complaint must be presented to the director of human resources/Title IX officer, in writing, within 10 business days following the decision being appealed so that documents can be reviewed and interviews can be conducted, as necessary, to determine if reasonable accommodations can be provided to the student.

The Student Disability Liaison is available, by appointment, to discuss the process for requesting reasonable accommodations under ADA with interested students.
