e. Give constructive and timely feedback on proposals (i.e., IRB/IACUC, protocols, thesis papers, presentations) and the oral thesis presentation. 5. Responsibilities of Dissertation Committee Members a. Help facilitate discussions to resolve any conflicts that may arise between the student and their advisor. b. Complete Dissertation Committee Progress Report every 6 months and determine if the student is making timely and adequate progress in their dissertation research. c. At the last Progress Report Meeting, the Committee must certify that all aims proposed by the student have been completed and that the student can begin writing the dissertation. d. Be available to meet with the student and/or Dissertation Committee when needed. e. Qualifications of Graduate Faculty Members The Graduate Qualifications Committee shall evaluate faculty qualifications for appointment to serve in the Graduate Program based on the following criteria. According to the SUNY College of Optometry Faculty Bylaws, Graduate Faculty Qualifications shall require periodic review by the Graduate Qualifications Committee. 1. Qualification for Teaching Graduate Courses Candidates shall be evaluated for having appropriate expertise to teach courses in the Graduate Program. 2. Qualifications for Serving as a Master Student Research Advisor a. Possess an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in an appropriate discipline. The degree requirement may be waived for individuals who are judged to have attained equivalent qualifications, by the Qualifications Committee b. Have a full-time faculty appointment at the College c. Have an active research program d. Have adequate funding to support a M.S. student’s thesis research. e. Be in compliance with all college, federal, state and local research regulations. 3. Qualification for Serving as a Doctoral Student Research Advisor a. A Ph.D. degree in an appropriate discipline. b. Have a full-time faculty appointment at the College c. Have an active research program d. Have adequate funding and space to support a Ph.D. student’s dissertation research. e. Be in compliance with all college, federal, state and local research regulations. 4. Qualification of Master’s Thesis Committee Members a. Candidates must have appropriate expertise. 5. Qualification of Doctoral Dissertation Committee Members a.
