13. SHORT-TERM GOALS Based on your responses in the previous sections and your long-term career goals, list your short-term goals and objectives for the next year as it pertains to 1) Scholarship, 2) Teaching & Education, 3) University, National, and International Service, and 4) Clinical/Patient Care. If you’re finding it challenging to pinpoint short-term goals, refer back to your Individual Development Plan (IDP) to refresh your memory on the career path you envision for yourself and consider which short-term objectives can serve as stepping stones. Write your goals using the SMART criteria; goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and have a Time Frame. Remember, a goal represents the overarching, “big picture” goal; objectives are mini-goals tied to that larger goal; strategies are action items and developmental activities that help you achieve your goals and objectives.
