Continuing Education Requirements for Privileging

Bi-Annual Renewal **Requirements must be met within the credentialing cycle** Ten (10) hours of contact lens specialty related continuing education credits, of which no more than half can be from correspondence courses, AND Satisfactory review by the Quality Assessment & Improvement Team of the medical records of no fewer than ten (10) contact lens specialty patient fits by the provider. Completion of not fewer than five (5) prosthetic fits, AND Satisfactory review by the Quality Assessment & Improvement Team of the medical records of no fewer than five (5) prosthetic lens patient fits by the provider. Satisfactory review by the Quality Assessment and Improvement Committee of the medical records of the app licant’s post-operative management of three (3) patients who have undergone non cataract ophthalmic surgery within the UEC or documentation of providing similar care to three patients external to the UEC, AND Two (2) hours of COPE-approved CE in the area of surgical management of non cataract ophthalmic surgery. Satisfactory review by the Quality Assessment and Improvement Committee of the medical records of the provider’s performance of electrodiagnostic testing of two (2) patients within the UEC, AND Ten (10) cases of electrodiagnostic testing completed by the applicant. Providers must submit documentation (e.g., certificate of course completion) of not fewer than forty CME credits AND Satisfactory review by the Quality Assessment & Improvement Team. This will include the review of the medical records of not fewer than twenty (20) patients examined, treated or consulted upon by the applicant within the University Eye Center. Completion of no fewer than four (4) intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy sessions AND Satisfactory review by the Quality Assessment and Improvement Committee of the medical records of the applicant’s post-operative management of no fewer than two (2) patients who have undergone intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy within the UEC.

Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) in Cornea/Contact Lenses and Refractive Technology, OR Completion of a residency or fellowship in Cornea/Contact Lenses, or currently enrolled in a post-graduate program in Contact Lenses, OR Instructor in a Contact Lens course at the SUNY College of Optometry.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Prosthetic Lenses

Completion of the AO Monoplex (or equivalent) course for the fitting of prosthetic lenses.

Completion of an ACOE-accredited Residency Program or Fellowship in Ocular Disease or Primary Care or documented experience in providing post-operative management of patients who have undergone non-cataract ophthalmic surgery (e.g., , glaucoma, retina, plastics).

Post-op Management of Non-Cataract Ophthalmic Surgery

ADVANCED CARE

Completion of an ACOE-accredited Residency Program or Fellowship in Ocular Disease with exposure to electrodiagnostic patient services, OR Completion of an apprenticeship with a qualified clinician. OR Comparable experience

Electro Diagnostic Services

Completion of residency in specialty area for which they are applying AND An active New York State to practice in medicine

Ophthalmologist Core Privileges

Receive training (which includes in-person demonstrated skill proficiency) from a Lumens trainer or from a current UEC faculty member who retains UEC IPL clinical privileges.
