The UEC’s patient bill of rights is given to every new patient as part of their check in process and is also posted in the clinical care areas. The patient bill of rights is also available to the students and faculty in the clinic’s electronically accessible policy and procedures manual. Patients are asked to review and sign a consent for treatment document, with additional consents available as needed for more advanced procedures. (8.2.6) The UEC has written policy, contained in its Policy and Procedures Manual, regarding receiving and responding to patient complaints. The clinic has developed a categorization profile that includes verbal complaints, patient satisfaction surveys, and written complaints. These documents are retained in the Office of Clinical Administration upon resolution of the complaint or grievance. (8.2.7) The UEC’s policies and procedures manual contains guidelines used by the program to address liability, safety and security issues. The UEC has a culture of planning that serves to optimize the patient’s healthcare experience (8.2.8) The program provides eyecare consistent with established clinical practice guidelines, including those contained in the AOA clinical practice guidelines. These guidelines are electronically available to all care providers on computers in each exam room and referenced in the UEC Policy and Procedure Manual. These guidelines are also utilized by the Quality Assessment and Improvement Committee during their reviews. (8.3)
